Barton, who is still awaiting trial for a second assault charge following a training-ground incident involving former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo, has been jailed for six months after he pleaded guilty to attacking two people in a drunken rage in Liverpool on December 27 last year.

The Journal today claims that chairman Chris Mort and owner Mike Ashley are contemplating whether to terminate the contract of the 25-year-old.

Keegan has repeatedly declared his intention to stand by Barton, whatever happened in the court room, but whether Mort and Ashley are so willing to support such a controversial figure is open to considerable debate.

His actions apart, Barton's performances on the pitch this season were largely shocking.

And his public dig at the Toon fans left many supporters wondering why the club have stuck by him.
