But after Osieck - who led Urawa Reds to victory in the Asian Champions League last season - decided against returning to Asia, Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi announced the coup.
Toon fans had a wonderful time when Reid was Sunderland boss.
But to his credit, he took the "monkey's heed" jibes in good fun.
And even defended the Toon Army when a SKY TV reporter branded them "idiots" when they tried to disrupt a pitch-side interview that Reid was conducting.
Reid was quick to point out - on TV - "they (Newcastle fans) are doing no harm! I've got big ears and look like a monkey. So what's the problem?"
Good on yer Peter!
