Moncur Faces Toughest Battle!

Trailing 2-0 in Budapest at half-time that June evening back in 1969, he told manager Joe Harvey: "Well Joe ... you'd better make this speech a good'n!"

United bounced back and won the match against Ujpest Doza 3-2, and the tie 6-2.

And now Moncur has vowed to win an even tougher battle ever - after being diagnosed suffering from colon cancer.

Not only was he Scotland skipper, but he led Sunderland to promotion in 1976, so (like Bob Stokoe) a rare figure looked upon with great fondness by fans on Tyneside AND Wearside.

He went under the knife this week to have a tumour removed.

He is now back at his home in Gateshead, awaiting test results to see what further treatment is needed.

Now a football pundit for Century FM, Moncur said: "I know that I am not out of the woods yet, but people should not be surprised to see me at work as usual, albeit I may be walking a little slower than normal."
