Matt Ritchie and Aleksandar Mitrovic argued over who was going to take the penalty against Preston.
Aleksandar Mitrovic has smoothed over his penalty protest sulk with Matt Ritchie – and admitted he was wrong.
Newcastle’s big Serb was desperate to take the spot kick won by team mate Ritchie during the 6-0 rout of Preston in the EFL Cup.
Ritchie wrestled the ball off him, and proceeded to score – with Rafa Benitez confirming he was the designated taker.
Mitrovic begged and briefly mooched away in a very public sulk, before going on to score a brilliant second goal of his own.
He explained: “Matt was down to take it first. I asked him if I could try to score. It was nothing. It was Matt’s.
“But I just fancied my chance. He scored a good penalty. As long as we are scoring goals it doesn’t matter who scores.
“I wanted the penalty because I want to score as many as I can. This is my job and I didn’t play at the beginning for a long time.
“But he took the penalty really well, and I am happy for him. He chooses to take it and it was good.”
Ritchie explained: “I’m the penalty taker! Mitro is a striker, everyone wants to score as many goals as possible. I’ve been on penalties since Dwight missed one early doors. I wasn’t going to give it up.
“Mitro is a great lad. He’s bubbly, lively, he’s great to have around the place. He’s a top striker and when he plays, he’ll score goals for sure.”
Mitrovic, who starts in World Cup qualifiers for Serbia but can’t get a regular berth at Championship club Newcastle, made his point to boss Benitez.
The last two games he has started Newcastle have won 6-0. He hopes to be involved on Saturday away to Preston.
He said: “It was a long time since I started a game so I was happy to start and to get two goals. They were nice goals. I could have had one or two more but it doesn’t matter. My job is to score and create goals.
“It’s not been easy for me as a striker because you have Dwight Gayle who is scoring every game. I love Dwight, I like him a lot as a person and as a player. I will keep going and that’s all I keep saying.
“I am working hard. If you are a good player you have to push yourself until you get your chance. I am doing that and until I get my chance. I hope that when I get my next chance I will score and do well again.”
