Milner holds a record 31 caps at Under-21 level but Barry is not far behind with 27, and it is only recently that he has been given a proper chance at senior level.

Milner: "There's a few lads in that squad who have been in the Under-21s and now GB.

"Everyone knows his quality - I've been on loan at Aston Villa and seen exactly how good a player he is.

"There is a lot of quality in England and sometimes you're going to have to bide your time and wait your chance - with the quality of the players, if they keep performing then they're more than likely to stay in the team.

"It'll be interesting to see if he keeps his place because he's done brilliantly. He's shown it can be done, and the younger lads such as Micah Richards and Ashley Young.

"He (Barry) has shown his versatility throughout his career - I think he's played in nearly every position for Aston Villa and the complete, quality player he is, I don't think it'll faze him to play in any position, whether it's wide on either side, in the middle or at left-back.

"He's got that quality, he's very composed, he's a good defender and he's showing his quality now."
