David Mills has been installed as Newcastle's acting chief scout.
The former United striker was already part of the club's scouting network but, following the departure of Ray Clarke to Celtic, Mills has taken over the top job for the rest of the year.
"David will be stepping into the breach until after Christmas, and only then will we assess the situation," said Graeme Souness. "He has been watching our opponents all season and he does that as well as anyone. He will also watch prospective players.
"At a club of this size, the type of players who can strengthen the team are the ones you often know lots about. But the club will always be interested in finding players like Charles N'Zogbia. That's where chief scouts earn their money. They have to keep their ear to the ground and a lot of it is about having good contacts."
