Miguel Almiron Suffers Injury on International Duty

Newcastle United midfielder Miguel Almiron has suffered an injury while on international duty.

The 26-year-old had to be carried off the pitch by a medical cart in injury time of Thursday's 2-2 draw with Peru in a World Cup qualifier.

The extent of Almiron's injury is currently unknown, and the Northern Echo report that it may have just been cramp. However, if it is a muscular injury, then it will likely rule the Paraguayan out of Newcastle's upcoming fixture at home to Manchester United.

Almiron arrived at St. James' Park from MLS side Atlanta United in January 2019 for a then-club record fee of approximately £21m.

He took a while to find his feet in the Premier League, failing to score or assist in his first six months at the club. However, manager Steve Bruce showed faith in the midfielder, featuring him in 42 games in all competitions during the 2019/20 season.

Almiron has made just one start from the Magpies' four Premier League outings so far, and he was most recently an unused substitute in the 3-1 home triumph over Burnley.

If Almiron was to be sidelined long-term, then it would likely give more minutes to wingers Ryan Fraser and Jacob Murphy.

Scotland international Fraser was signed on a free transfer this summer following Bournemouth's relegation. He has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, winning a penalty last time out against Burnley.

Murphy has also had limited time on the pitch in the league, playing just 16 minutes in the draw against Tottenham Hotspur. There were rumours that the former Norwich man would be exiting Tyneside this summer, but manager Bruce denied these after the winger's performance against Morecambe in the EFL Cup.

After the international break, the Magpies face a tough set of fixtures. They host Manchester United before a visit to Molineux, and then begin November with a clash against high-flying Everton.
