Merson: 'Toon Defenders Will Take Them Down!'

Paul Merson: "I said before the show that Newcastle have got some bad players and it showed today.

"They did okay, they defended well, Chelsea never looked like scoring and they were comfortable. And then a pass went back to Fabricio Coloccini and instead of just lumping it like a centre-half he tried to take a touch and was robbed by Anelka.

"Seconds later Lampard headed it in. Shearer just stood there with his arms outstretched. He just could not believe it, but that's what Newcastle are like.

"When Malouda scored it was so easy - a long kick flicked on by Anelka and Lampard had nobody near him. He rolled Malouda in and he smashed it in the net.

"It was out of nothing and it was just schoolboy stuff.

"The defending. It was just unreal. If it happened in League Two you could understand it, but we're talking about top-drawer Premier League players.

"He'll be frustrated with that. He and Iain Dowie will sit there and think it doesn't matter what they do if they keep on playing like that.

"It's alright saying they have got to address that and keep clean sheets, but they've got to win football matches. To do that you've got to attack and when you attack you're leaving gaps at the back.

"They're not very good at defending."
