The ex-Newcastle midfielder was certainly not the choice of 99.9% of the supporters, and despite the good result in Munich on Thursday, he is struggling to get the fans back to the stadium.

He also seems as though he wants to distance himself from the Sam Allardyce success story, and bulid a club with new foundations ... as he snubs the suggestion he should bring Gary Speed back onto the club's coaching staff.

Speed started the campaign by combining his playing duties with the role of first-team coach before leaving the role in October.

Megson: "You are either a player or a coach, but not both.

"It is an impossible job. You can't do both. Player/manager is a bridge too far and player/coach is two bridges too far.

"I tried it at Norwich and it can't be done.

"If you are playing, you need to be training and if you are running the session, you can't train."

Cost £5.5m from Everton, after he won a Championship winners medal at Leeds. Good, strong midfielder who took his time to settle into the team, but had a great understanding with Rob Lee. Gets most of his goals attacking from deep on corner-kicks, sneaking in unnoticed on the near post. Welsh international skipper. Joined Bolton the summer of 2004.
