Officers were called to the Grey Hen pub, in Harton Lane, South Shields, at around 7pm on Saturday after receiving reports of a disturbance involving Sunderland fans.

No one was injured but five Mackems were arrested and charged with drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Grey Hen manager Judith Dean told how the alleged trouble flared when 12 Sunderland fans burst into the pub at about 7pm.

The 43-year-old said: "We were filled with families and children. It was a great atmosphere before the fans came in.

"They weren't too drunk, certainly not too drunk to serve, but they filled up the pool room and got louder and louder.

"They were singing anti-Newcastle songs and there were people trying to watch the Liverpool match, so I asked them to be quiet.

"When they refused I asked them to leave, but they didn't take any notice of me. I didn't want to tackle the group on my own, so I called the police.

"We couldn't believe it when the police used the Taser.

"I was so shocked when the incident appeared on the news, it makes the pub look terrible when I know myself that it's a good family pub.

"We never have bother like this, but the rumours are running rife in the area.

"People think we're going to be closed down because of it, but I'd have no hesitation to show the match again here, because I think it was just an awful one-off."
