A 19-year old Sunderland fan has been arrested on suspicion of malicious communication after offensive tweets were sent about Liam Sweeney and John Alder who died aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.

John had only missed one Newcastle game home and away since 1973.

Police were contacted on Saturday following derogatory comments put online about the two Newcastle fans.

Sunderland fans raised a staggering £40,000 in donations in memory of the pair that will go to charity, following an appeal launched by Gary Ferguson.

Barry Sweeney (Liam’s dad) told the Chronicle: “My daughter told me about it, I don’t think it’s worth talking about.

“He’s not a Sunderland fan.

“The Sunderland people have been tremendous since what happened.

“I would not condone it if it had been anyone else, regardless of it being Liam and John, I wouldn’t be happy.”

The social media account has since been deleted and the Sunderland fan has been released on bail until November 11.
