The Magpies, unbeaten in three pre-season games after a 6-0 demolition of Bohemian and a 2-2 comeback draw with Doncaster, ran out 4-0 winners in Belgium.

Ayoze Perez scored a brace with a goal either side of Daryl Janmaat's header to give Rafa Benitez's men a 3-0 lead inside the first half. Jonjo Shelvey, introduced as a second-half substitute, completed the rout with a deflected strike after the interval.

It was a scoreline befitting of a dominant performance. Newcastle looked clinical in the final third and solid at the back.

Perez set the tone for the afternoon in the 13th minute of the game, exchanging neat passes with Rolando Aarons before sliding to finish at the near post.

He turned provider soon after, delivering a free-kick for Janmaat to rise highest and double the Toon's lead. Perez then capped a fine individual display with a 20-yard volley on 39 minutes.

Shelvey, who has this week reiterated his commitment to Newcastle and vowed to win back his starting place, scored within three minutes of his arrival on the pitch.

The former Liverpool and Swansea midfielder's long-range effort deflected off a Lokeren defender and into the back of the net.

The only blemish on Newcastle's afternoon came late on when new signing Jesus Gamez was sent off along with the hosts' Marko Miric for an unsavoury clash.

Newcastle begin their promotion push in the Sky Bet Championship on Friday August 5 with a tricky away day at Fulham.
