Lehmann Wants No 1 Spot But Shay Given Rumour Continues!

Sam Allardyce has allegedly been looking to Bolton's Reebok Stadium for goalkeeper cover ... and I'm sure you know who I am talking about.

But although Given has not made any noises suggesting he is unhappy on Tyneside since the appointment of Big Sam, we hear from London the Toon boss is expecting the Irishman to move on sooner rather than later.

Something the London-based media are happy to encourage, of course. Although I don't believe a word of it personally.

But the cockney press love a dig at Newcastle, and it is nothing new to read Wenger's interest in Ireland's best ... if not the Premiership's best ... Shay Given.

So where does that put Jens Lehmann? The veteran goalkeeper, who turns 38 next month, has recently been hampered by an elbow injury picked up during the last international break.

As a result, Lehmann has not featured for the Gunners since August 19 at Blackburn, where his mistake proved costly for Arsene Wenger's side in a 1-1 draw.

During that spell on the sidelines, Manuel Almunia has proved a more than able deputy, with Arsenal storming to the top of the Premier League and also impressing in Europe.

Given was obviously not too pleased when Allardyce picked Steve Harper ahead of him recently, and I'm sure the Irishman would only move to a big club like Arsenal if he was guaranteed first team football.

Lehmann is preparing to face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, and is confident he is set for a swift return to the Arsenal side.

Lehmann: "I know I will play for Arsenal again and think it may well be in our next game.

"Maybe this break has been good for me. Maybe I needed it. I never like being out of the team, but look what happened last time.

"The manager left me out for a few weeks three years ago and when I got my place back, I ended up having the best season of my career.

"I feel ready to come back and play to the same level again.

"I am absolutely convinced that I will play again and I am not even considering a transfer."
