Leeds And Toon - Two Peas In A Pod

It could be argued Birmingham City and Sheffield United are the two clubs from major cities with a huge fan base that have won as little as us over recent years.

But the closest to home, with fans who deserve better, must be Leeds United.

I've always had a soft spot for (what used to be called) the Peacocks, even though I spent a night in a Leeds cell back in September 1976 for a little altercation at Elland Road when I was hit with half a brick. No hard feelings.

On Saturday Leeds plumbed new depths as Stoke secured their first away win of the season 4-0 at the ground that was once a Leeds United bastion. Ex-Toon coach John Carver is now trying to pave over the cracks, but he saw his side slump into the bottom three.

It was Stoke's first win at Elland Road in more than 25 years and leaves Leeds with just one league win in their last six matches. And how it reminds me of that dreadful season back in 1991 when we were very much in the same boat.

Ossie Ardiles was given the boot and the Messiah returned. We entered the final furlong of the season in the same position as Leeds, but Keegan saved the day.

If anything the experience taught us one thing. With the likes of Reading, Wigan, Watford and Fulham in the Premiership - with a total fan base of all four that wouldn't fill St James Park ... NO club (no matter how big) has a right to success.
