We are 20 points off the top (Man City) but only 5 away from relegation (West Ham).
However, Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer put things perfectly into perspective after the Magpies’ defeat to Manchester United.
The 4-1 defeat to Jose Mourinho’s title-challenging side was a third consecutive defeat for Rafa Benitez’s side.
And that form has seen them drop to 11th in the table, having been surprise early challengers among the Europa League spots in the Premier League.
Despite that, Shearer insists it’s still been a great start to the campaign for a newly promoted side.
He said on Match of the Day: “It’s been a disappointing time with the last three results for Newcastle fans.
“But they’re sat just below mid-table; 14 points after 12 games.
“I think the manager, the fans and even the players would have accepted that before the season started.”
What's next?
Newcastle have a week to prepare for their next match - at home to Watford in the Premier League next Saturday (15:00 GMT).
A win would put us back on track. But a defeat would see us tumble down the table towards that relegation trap-door.
Four defeats on the trot is UNTHINKABLE!
