Krul Makes Recovery!

Last updated : 16 October 2014 By Footy Mad - Editor

The goalkeeper suffered a "very minor elbow injury" while training with Holland, and that piled more pressure on Alan Pardew's position at the club.

A win would be the first league victory of the season, and the manager knows how important the goalkeeper is to his team.

Scans on Monday showed ligament damage, the club revealed on Wednesday morning, before declaring on Wednesday afternoon that he should be in contention this weekend.

Newcastle statement: "Tim Krul has been further assessed today by the club's medical staff and the club can confirm that he has nothing more than a very minor elbow injury.

"The club will continue to monitor the situation but are confident that he will be available for the game against Leicester City on Saturday."

Newcastle United haven't lost to the Foxes since April 2000.

Danny Guthrie's strike was enough to sink Leicester and fire Newcastle to the top of the Championship.

Steve Howard's header and Paul Gallagher's free-kick tested Steve Harper as Leicester started well.

Newcastle then had two penalty appeals rejected when Gallagher and then Wayne Brown looked to have handled.

But Guthrie hit the winner when he cut inside and smashed the ball home, while Alan Smith, Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton all went close to adding a second goal.

Chris Hughton's side have now won four of their five league matches so far this season and remain unbeaten.

Mike Ashley, prospective buyer Barry Moat and would-be manager Alan Shearer were all in attendance on a night when a New York-based consortium claimed they were ready to open talks over a deal for the club.

On the pitch, Newcastle were without Fabricio Coloccini after he joined up with the Argentina squad, and injured quartet Nicky Butt, Jonas Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi and Andy Carroll.

So Hughton decided to pair teenager Nile Ranger with Nolan in attack, and the former ended up winning the man-of-the-match award.

The Magpies went close with four minutes gone when Geremi and Guthrie broke at pace to set up Nolan, whose right-footed shot was saved comfortably by Chris Weale.

They had appeals for a penalty turned down when Ryan Taylor's cross clipped Gallagher's arm, and Brown was fortunate to escape after a more blatant handball a few seconds later.

Harper made the game's first real save when Howard met Matt Oakley's corner with a bullet header and he once again came to the rescue with a fine diving save to keep out Gallagher's free-kick.

Newcastle finally broke the deadlock when Ranger fed Guthrie, who stepped inside defender Jack Hobbs and smashed the ball past Weale.

Geremi might have doubled his side's advantage within three minutes with a swerving drive which just evaded the bottom corner, while Smith, Nolan and Barton also came close to extending the lead.

Newcastle caretaker manager Chris Hughton:
"I am hopeful that we will bring certainly one or two [new players] in tomorrow [Tuesday]. I am even more confident that nobody in this present squad will be leaving us.

"We certainly have good players here and it is only right that the young lads are given an opportunity in this squad, because we feel they deserve that.

"But we need... to make sure we have got a squad that's strong enough to compete for a whole season. The club is aware of that."

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson:
"I don't think there was a lot in the game. The goal we conceded wasn't a good one from our perspective.

"It was a game we looked forward to and expected ourselves to get something out of.

"As far as we were concerned, it was a game we could come and win."

Calls For Geordie Landmark To Be Touched Up ...

There have been calls for the North East's most recognisable landmark ... the Tyne Bridge ... to be given a lick of paint.

Needs the council on the job!

It has not been painted in almost 15 years, and is not scheduled for a paint job for at least another two.

There have been calls for it have a facelift.

The Chronicle is behind a bid to get the council to "get it sorted".

The bridge cost around £66,000 to repaint in 1976, but 10 times that in 1985, and £1.9m in 2000.

In 2000, the green paint used in 1928 opening of the bridge was recreated – but the job caused traffic headaches for commuters as more than 10,000 litres of paint were applied.

10 Things you didn't know about the Tyne Bridge ...

1) The earliest bridge across the Tyne at that specific area was wooden and built by the Romans around 122 at the place of the present Swing Bridge and was called "The Tyne Bridge".

2) The next bridge built was one of stone in 1270. After 500 years, this was destroyed by the great flood of 1771.

3) The idea for a bridge at the location of the present Tyne Bridge dates to 1864, but it was not until the early 1920s that proposals were commenced in earnest to build the current bridge.

4) On 29 April 1924 Newcastle and Gateshead approved the plans, and the Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead (Corporations) Bridge Act was passed on 7 August that year, with an estimated cost of £1 million including land acquisitions.

5) The final cost on completion was £1.2 million.

6) The Tyne Bridge was designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson, comparably to their Sydney Harbour Bridge version; based on their earlier design on the Hell Gate Bridge in New York City (which was completed in 1916). The bridge was completed on 25 February 1928, and officially opened on 10 October by King George V and Queen Mary, who were the first to use the roadway, travelling in their Ascot landau.

7) When the bridge celebrated its golden jubilee in 1978, 1,000 balloons were released.

8) To mark 75 years, in October 2003, a parade was held with family of the 1928 workforce of scaffolders, painters, and builders who made the bridge what it is today.

9) From the 80s, there were calls to light it up at night. In 1993 that got under way. The-then Toon manager Kevin Keegan flicked the switch to turn on 48 huge bulbs to illuminate the arch.

10) When it was completed, the Tyne Bridge formed the biggest true arch in the UK. The bridge spans 531 feet (162 m) and the road deck is 84 feet (26 m) above the river level.
