The Chelsea midfielder has been included in the squad for the first time having been ineligible to face his parent club in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Rob Elliot will miss out with a minor back problem, while defenders Jesus Gamez (ankle) and Florian Lejeune (foot) continue their respective fights for fitness.

James Tarkowski and Steven Defour are doubts for Burnley.

Tarkowski is battling a groin issue and Defour a knee complaint, so both will face late assessments ahead of the trip to the north east.

New recruit Aaron Lennon is in line for his debut after switching from Everton, while Dean Marney, Chris Wood and Stephen Ward remain sidelined.
