Hall has gone, but Keegan is ready to take the Magpies back up the table with the help of current owner Mike Ashley.

Reports that Ashley had tried to offer to the club have been disputed by United insiders who maintain they are in it for the long haul.

Keegan: "It has been work as usual for us. "The other things that go on around us, we don't really need to know much about, or whether they are true or not.

"When I sat down with Mike Ashley five weeks ago, I know what he said and that is good enough for me.

"If you look at the Academy and the club, everything is about long-term thinking.

"Dennis Wise has come in and it all says to me that there is massive commitment for today and tomorrow.

"The club is going the right direction and it has all the things we need.
"Those of us who have been in the game long enough know what is happening.

"There is no real substance in these rumours, but they make good stories.

"I think potentially we are under-performing and we shouldn't be where we are.

"We have to fight our way out of it and that's what we intend doing."
