Owner Mike Ashley and chairman Chris Mort found themselves under fire at the weekend for trying to tempt Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp when most fans felt he would be no better than Allardyce.

Redknapp thankfully turned us down, and Ashley suddenly had a problem to face.

Two in fact - not only that the fans wanted someone they could depend on (and Redknapp does like jumping ship every now and again); but Ashley realised he had better start listening to their calls because the owner could be next on the Boo-Boy list.

The Magpies confirmed Keegan's appointment shortly before 4.30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

Keegan: "It's nice to be home. I'm delighted to be back."

Mort: "I think we've got the right man in the end.

"We didn't think we'd be able to get Kevin back to the club but he's the right man and we're absolutely delighted."

The response of the Newcastle fans was immediate as lengthy queues formed at the St James' ticket office ahead of the FA Cup third-round replay against Stoke, causing kick-off to be delayed by 15 minutes.
