The 44-year-old took was in charge of the side for the 6-0 defeat of Manchester United and the FA Cup third-round replay win over Stoke, but stood aside on the arrival of Kevin Keegan.

Dennis Wise, Tony Jimenez and Jeff Vetere have been brought in to help with player recruitment, and that seems to have spurred the former Middlesbrough defender to resigned his post.

Keegan: "He said on Thursday he wanted to go. He didn't give me a reason but he has been at this club through difficult times and said he wasn't happy.

"I asked him to think about it for three or four days, he said he wanted to go and I respected that but it is a pity because I was looking forward to working with him."
