Jenas To Jump Into Dyer's Boots?

England coach Steve McClaren will announce his squad tomorrow and is likely to recall Jenas, who featured in the 3-0 win against Estonia earlier this year.

Dyer was only a fringe player anyway, so I wouldn't say he is as much a miss as the media suggest.

Jenas, who cost £7 million from Newcastle in 2005, yesterday agreed an improved five-year contract to stay at Tottenham until 2012.

And "JJ", as he likes to be called, said that he hoped to stay with Tottenham until the end of his career.

Jenas: "This club has the calibre of squad that any player would want to be part of.

Martin Jol: "His goals from midfield are a vital ingredient for us and he is already off the mark this season.

"He always wants to learn and that is the right mentality to have, he wants to prove that he is a top player."

Big signing from Nottingham Forest, he was captain of the England Youth team.

Always a cocky kid ... midfielder who was reluctant to join Newcastle unless they gave him a guarantee of first team football.

Robson promised him an opportunity ... and he took it.

Won his first full England cap against Australia, and won the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2003.

Cost us £5m, a record for a kid so young.

Made skipper in 2004 when Alan Shearer was injured.

Sold to Spurs in August 2005, and he said on leaving, "playing for Newcastle is like being in a goldfish bowl".

Our lasting memory of him? He always walked as though he had an invisible handbag, and as though he was chewing a toffee with his arse.
