It was a big win

Sir Bobby

"It was a big win for us today with Arsenal losing.

"I was more hopeful that Manchester United might give up something at Villa but whatever way it is an excellent day for us.

"We are giving ourselves a chance and the squad is up for it.

"Bellamy and Shearer are a terrific combination up front and I though Bramble was quite outstanding for us at the back - especially for a lad who is just 23 and hasn't played much at all with us through injury.

"It was a genuine, deserved penalty.

"The crowd here don't like Craig but I bet they wished they had him on their side. He got a very harsh yellow card in Milan on Tuesday but he got what he deserved today.

"When you travel as fast as he does you only need a touch and you can go (down). OK, we've had to clean up his act a bit but he has sensational pace and can give defenders a torrid time with that alone.

"But he's just a player good off the ball at making runs. He's a bit of a dribbler as well and creates problems."

Alan Curbishley

"It all hinged on two penalty incidents. Theirs was given and ours turned down. They were both close calls and if you give one you should give the other.

"But the nice thing for Newcastle is that they are on a roll and have crept up on the title-race leaders. They've got the squad to make it highly competitive now but their big advantage is that their chances have never been talked up.

"They are playing Barcelona on Wednesday and if they can get a result against them, whether it is enough to get them through to the quarter-finals in the Champions League, that will be another major boost for them."
