Spanish international Marcelino is regarded as the player who was "too frightened to play for Newcastle in the Premier League."

He was out for FOUR MONTHS with a broken finger - when Shola Ameobi played on with a broken cheekbone and half his face smashed in!

Rafa Benitez has revealed that defender Jesus Gamez will not return to face Rotherham on Saturday.

The former Atletico Madrid player has made just two appearances for the Toon since signing for the relegated side in the summer, due to an ongoing achilles tendon issue.

However, speaking to the Evening Chronicle, boss Rafa Benitez revealed that the former Champions League full-back could return to action soon.

“He had a little problem before but he was still training,” Benitez told the Evening Chronicle. “He didn’t miss any sessions before but we could see he was not improving.

“So we decided to stop him and do a different treatment. We have the international break so hopefully we will see where we are with him.”

The experienced ex-Malaga defender has featured just once in the league for the Magpies this season, appearing against Brighton after making his debut in the EFL Cup against League Two minnows Cheltenham Town.

The potential return of Gamez will come as a boost to Newcastle fans, after their defence have shipped four goals in their last two games.

Gamez signed for Atleti after making 256 appearances in all competitions for Malaga, before making a £2.2million transfer to the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

The uncapped Spaniard appeared 16 times for Diego Simeone’s side last season, including one Champions League appearance in a 2-0 home win against Galatasaray en route to the final.

Rafa Benitez used his Spanish connections to sign his fellow countryman, ahead of interest from Premier League sides West Ham and Everton.
