The 24-year-old – who has been out for ten months - battled back from a knee injury, a dislocated shoulder and broken jaw (from Andy Carrol because Taylor was texting his girlfriend).

With Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson in blistering form of late, who does Taylor expect to replace?

Taylor play at least an hour at Robin Park tonight for the reserves.

Peter Beardsley: "We've got Steven in the squad, and it's great for him, and great for us.

"it's good to see him back.

"It's a big boost for the other three defenders who will play with him. It's similar to when Danny Simpson came back from his injury.

"They'll benefit from his experience.

"I'm not sure what sort of team Wigan will put out as they're still in the Carling Cup," he said.

"I don't kow how they will play it. In Roberto Martinez they have a first-class manager, and I'm sure he'll make the right decisions for his club."

Taylor: "I was delighted to make the bench against Sunderland, and I felt ready to play a part if I'd been called upon.

"To prove my fitness, I just want to play as many games as possible now, and I'm looking forward to playing against Wigan. If I come through that, I'll hope to make the bench again at Arsenal, and then look to try to force my way back in."
