Is McClaren The Best We've Got In This Country?

Venables has urged the FA not to make a "knee-jerk reaction" if Steve McClaren's side fail to qualify for Euro 2008.

McClaren's tenure as manager would almost certainly come to an end if they do not reach the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer, and last month's defeat to Russia means their qualification destiny is now out of their hands.

But McClaren has never seemed comfortable in the job, and if he is the best manager for the job ... God help the rest!

Losing an international manager is not similar to losing a club manager. You don't have to rebuild by selling and buying, you simply "tweek" with players that are already available.

So making an "inspirational" change is better than hanging onto someone who has toured the world on his "FA bus pass", living the glory life, and not produced as a manager.

Venables: "If the FA is convinced they have someone better who will instantly transform us into World Cup winners then fine.

"But they must make sure they come to a decision for the right reasons not just because it seems right at one particular moment.

"We are not thinking about our futures. Whatever happens to me and Steve McClaren will happen. That is out of our hands but knee-jerk reactions will be a mistake in my view."

England's best hope of qualification is for Russia to drop points away to Israel next Saturday and for the Three Lions to then beat Croatia at Wembley on November 21.
