The 29-year old deputised for the injured Tim Krul last season but missed the second half of the campaign himself after suffering a thigh issue.

Elliot has now returned to fitness and played his first 90 minutes in over eight months against Swansea City for the Under-21’s last week, but finds himself third-choice stopper at St James Park.

Karl Darlow has established himself as back-up to Krul but is currently out injured, allowing Elliot to make the substitute’s bench in recent weeks.

“It’s just, as always, a case of being patient and trying to do well when you get an opportunity,” said Elliot, in quotes published by the Chronicle.

“It was an unfortunate injury. This was my first full 90 minutes since last December. It’s been a tough few months for me personally.

“That’s football sometimes. You go from highs to lows and vice-versa. In football, as long as you give everything you can every day ... that’s all people ask of you.”

The former Charlton man has made just 28 appearances for the Magpies since switching to Tyneside in August 2011, and breaking into the first-team seems an unlikely turn of events for the well-travelled ‘keeper.

Tim Krul is head and shoulders above his goalkeeping rivals and should he depart the club, it’s likely they would look to recruit rather than turn to Elliot.
