Insurers To Decide On Owen!

The cash will not come out of Football Association coffers, but they insist they are covered for such a situation.

It was thought the FA would only pay up if Owen is out for more than 28 days ... but that seems likely anyway. And, judging on past history, they are hardly eager to come up with the dosh.

Former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd got involved in a massive row with the FA over the compensation for the cruciate knee ligament injury Owen sustained at last year's World Cup. A battle he won.

FA spokesman: "The FA takes out policies to cover for injuries sustained on international duty.

"This figure can be up to £100,000 a week but it is not the FA who pay this money out, it is our insurers, if they deem it is fit to do so."
