The two former stars are said to have had private messages, which they left on the mobile phone voicemail of Professional Football Association chief executive Gordon Taylor, recorded by private investigators working for the Sunday newspaper.

What the hell could they learn from 'tapping' Gazza's phone? Allegedly the bugger doesn't know how to switch it on!

We tried phoning him for a comment to the article and all we got was an answer phone message: "Doon the pub, back for bait latter". (* mind you, we may have phoned the wrong number).

Other public figures said to have been bugged by the newspaper include former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, PR agent Max Clifford, London mayor Boris Johnson, Sir Alex Ferguson and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
