Hughton was quick to play down the rumour Bellars could be heading back to St James' Park by saying: "No we are not interested".
It seems as though he WAS interested.
Bellamy (interviewed on the BBC for Five Live) also says that Manchester United were also in the running to sign him in the summer, but Manchester City refused to sell him to their rival club.
Bellamy also suggests that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was interested in signing him in 2003, however a deal could not be hammered out.

And a word about X Factor winner "Mackem" Joe McElderry who has just revealed that he is gay (as if we DIDN'T know!).
