The Manchester United midfielder has been given permission to open talks with Sunderland but Alan Pardew will match Sunderland’s offer in the next 48 hours and attempt to persuade Gibson to come to St James' Park.
The 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford and wants to move on.
Gibson is available for £5m.
Gibson is a close pal with Danny Simpson after the pair played together both at Man U, and at feeder club Royal Antwerp on loan.
