Sources on Tyneside have suggested the Frenchman's name was on a short-list of candidates to replace Sam Allardyce, and that he could form a partnership with Geordie hero Alan Shearer.

The 60-year-old, who guided Liverpool to five major trophies during his six years at Anfield, was said to be "very interested", but the FFF claim he has "given his word" he is staying in France.
