Mark Viduka announced his arrival on Tyneside with a first-half double as Newcastle saw off West Ham in a tight encounter.

The Australian got his side off to the perfect start with a second-minute bullet header, and he then converted Charles N'Zogbia's cross four minutes before half-time.

In the meantime, Dean Ashton had dragged the visitors back into it with his second goal in as many games since his return from injury.

Newcastle rescued themselves from the brink of disaster to snatch a Barclays Premiership draw against battling West Ham.

Trailing to goals from Carlton Cole and Marlon Harewood inside 22 disastrous first-half minutes, the Hammers looked certain to pile the agony on Glenn Roeder's side after their 5-1 FA Cup humiliation by Birmingam in midweek.

But James Milner's 45th-minute strike - his third in as many games at St James' Park - dragged the Magpies back into it and Nolberto Solano's 53rd-minute penalty set the scene for a much improved second-half display which might have brought victory but for the woodwork and the heroics of Hammers keeper Roy Carroll.

2005/6 NEWCASTLE 0 WEST HAM 0

NEWCASTLE: Given, Carr, Taylor, Boumsong, Babayaro, Jenas, Parker, Bowyer, N'Zogbia (Clark 63), Milner, Shearer.
Subs Not Used: Elliott, Harper, Faye, Brittain.

WEST HAM: Carroll, Repka, Ferdinand, Gabbidon, Konchesky, Benayoun (Dailly 78), Mullins, Reo-Coker, Etherington, Harewood (Zamora 90), Sheringham (Newton 48).
Subs Not Used: Noble, Hislop.

Toothless Newcastle let 10-man West Ham off the hook after defender Paul Konchesky was controversially sent off.

The full-back was dismissed for a 55th-minute professional foul on Jermaine Jenas, ironically, the man who had his red card at Arsenal last Sunday rescinded, although like his victim, he appeared to win the ball.

However, unlike the Gunners last weekend, the Magpies could not make their numerical advantage count and they were booed from the pitch as manager Graeme Souness' problems deepened.

That Newcastle badly misfired is not in any doubt, but it would be churlish not to acknowledge the Hammers' performance with Danny Gabbidon outstanding at the back and Marlon Harewood giving Jean-Alain Boumsong the sternest of examinations.
