The InterToto trophy was handed over at St James' Park last night, but do we regard it as nothing bigger than the Texaco Cup, Japan Cup and Anglo-Italian that we won in the 1970's and 1980's?

Glenn Roeder insists we should show some respect, but even he had to choke back a giggle.

In the end the honour was given to an 18-year-old Newcastle United fan who lifted the Intertoto trophy before the club's Uefa cup tie with AZ Alkmaar.

Season-ticket holder Martin Newton was given the honour after being selected as the club's one millionth fan of the season at an earlier match.
He collected the cup alongside captain Scott Parker before the 4-2 victory over the Dutch side on Thursday.

The club picked one seat at random during half-time at the Boro match and Martin - who had taken his dad's season ticket for the day - came up lucky.

Martin Newton, of Crawcrook, Gateshead: "Nothing like this has ever happened to me before and it's still sinking in. It will be a great honour to receive the award on the club's behalf."
