... he never stamped his authority on the team and Alardyce's history remains the standard set.

Bolton v Villa was terrible viewing for the purist, as most of waited for the "big picture" Liverpool v Arsenal on SKY TV. But Megson believes he has a squad of players at his disposal to get the club out of relegation trouble.

He had to settle for a point in his first game in charge, in a 1-1 draw that was like "watching paint dry".

France striker Nicolas Anelka gave Bolton the lead with a free-kick to chalk up his sixth league goal of the campaign.

But Villa rallied and substitute Luke Moore equalised when he chested the ball home.

SKY TV pundit feels Bolton have ... once again ... gone for the wrong manager, and he believes Graeme Souness would have transformed the club.

Andy Gray: "I still think Bolton should have taken stock and looked at who was available.

"Gary Megson is not experienced at this level, and Bolton NEED someone with the experience to get the club out of trouble.

"Souness was available and I'm very surprised he has been overlooked."

Megson: "I was happy with the effort and we have the players to get us out of trouble.

"While we were not as solid in the second half as we were in the first, it gives us a bit of optimism.

"But there is not going to be a revolution here, just evolution.

"It would be a mistake on my part to change too much too quickly."
