The Magpies suffered a dismal evening at Upton Park on Monday, as two goals from Dimitri Payet handed West Ham all three points in a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Newcastle barely troubled West Ham, meaning new manager McClaren remains without a Premier League win this season after five games in charge.

Many fans and pundits have given their negative reviews on Newcastle's performance in East London, and former boss John Carver has now joined in with the criticism.

Carver, who won just three games of 20 during his stint in charge of the club last season, was working as a pundit on BeIN Sport, and slammed Newcastle's performance.

Carver claims that McClaren should be concerned by the fact that full backs Daryl Janmaat and Massadio Haidara were the most attack-minded players, and says that McClaren should look to move away from the possession based style that he has implemented so far.

"We talk about Daryl Janmaat getting three shots, but on the other side, Haidara, he was quite progressive," said Carver. "Your two most progressive players in the team were your full-backs – that has to be a concern, it has to be a worry."

"They have to start and get players running beyond and when you play this Tiki-taka football, where you keep the ball…you keep the ball, it is dead easy for West Ham just to get back in that solid shape – make it difficult so they can’t come through you," he added.

Newcastle face Watford this weekend, and now need to push for their first victory of the campaign - before this winless runs drags on into October.
