The Aston Villa striker has warned Newcastle United that the hard work to get back into the Premier League hasn’t even begun yet.

The on-loan striker scored twice against Swansea City and went some way to showing the Boo-Boys they have picked on the wrong man.

Marlon Harewood: “We’ve got an eight-point gap but it means nothing. I’ve been in these positions before and it can quickly disappear.

“We just have to take care of ourselves and not think about what other teams are doing.

“Everyone beats each other in this division so there’s always a chance you can get tripped up.

“We just have to keep putting these wins together and as long as we’re at the top that’s all we need to worry about, the hard work hasn’t even started yet.

"There’s such a long way to go. We’re not even halfway yet and while we’ve done well so far it’ll count for nothing if we don’t keep it up.

“I’d love to have it (loan spell) extended and I’d love to be part of this for the rest of the season.

“I don’t know whether there’s been any moves behind the scenes to extend it I’ve just got to keep my head down and keep coming in day in day out and look forward to the games.

“I wouldn’t say I’m close to where I want to be (fitness-wise) I’ve just basically started, but I’m training hard and working hard and I’m trying to get up to where the other lads are in terms of fitness.

“It takes a while to get to know your team-mates to know where to make the runs, it’s hard at first but you have to keep working hard.”
