NEWCASTLE UNITED: Soderberg, Tavernier, Dummett, Campbell (J.Henderson 60), Grieve, McDermott, Donaldson (Folan 86), Inman, Airey, Nzuzi (Ameobi 46), Newton.

LIVERPOOL: Hansen, Darby, Robinson, Irwin, Mavinga, Wisdom, Amoo, Roberts, Ngoo (Bruna 64), Fernandez, Ince.

Peter Beardsley was delighted by the attendance at Whitley Park.

Beardsley: “I have to be honest, with England playing I wasn’t sure.

“But our kitman George Ramshaw, who has been with the reserves a long time, said we normally get 200 here, so I think it was good and the fans were brilliant.

“The game was good to watch for them.

“We play Chelsea next at St James’ Park next Thursday and it will be great for our players to play there.

“It would be great to see the fans come to this one. I’m sure a lot of them who will go to this game will also go to the Carling Cup game at Stamford Bridge as well.”

United grabbed the lead with a Phil Airey from penalty then Jesus Fernandez tied things up on 27 minutes to make it 1-1.

An hour gone and Ryan Donaldson set up Ameobi to make it 2-1 just as Sol Campbell was about to leave the field.

David Amoo shot was deflected  on 75 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw.

Beardsley: “I think it was a good performance by both teams.

“I think we’re quite happy, but the most important thing as we keep saying is the development of the players.

“We had a few youngsters out there and, to be fair to Liverpool, they had some out there as well.

“That is what this league is going to be about, but I think the football that was played would have been enjoyed by the fans.”
