The 26-year-old jetted off to Buenos Aries for a well-earned break ahead of his inclusion in Diego Maradona's national squad for this summer's World Cup.

He arrived on Tyneside from Real Mallorca almost two years ago, and we have to face the fact that a successful World Cup would have the top clubs offering him riches Newcastle could not afford.

Jonas Gutiérrez: "The fans have always stayed with us and have always believed in us, even in the worst moments such as the end of last season.

"This season it has been nice because we have been winning games and we have all enjoyed it.

"It is nice and makes me happy to see the fans like they were when we got the trophy.

"I am now going back to Argentina for a few days' of rest but I want to say 'thank you' to our fans before I go and I'm looking forward to next season already.

"But before then I will wait for the news of the national squad and I hope to be included for the World Cup because it has been my dream sinceI was a child.

"I have had a very enjoyable season here with Newcastle and that has left me feeling very good for this summer."
