Griffin still after international honours

Last updated : 12 November 2002 By Martyn Elliott

Several weeks ago Griffin revealed his aim to win full international honours with England, and anyone who has compared his recent form with that of Gary Neville will realise that a call-up may not be that far away.

The full-back certainly had plenty of defending to do when watched by Sven Goran Eriksson at Highbury on Saturday.

"The gaffer did tell us before the game that the England manager was in the crowd, but my only ambition at the moment is to stay fit and play regularly for Newcastle United," Griffin said after the game.

"I thought I played quite well against Arsenal and I did not do my chances any harm.

"Hopefully I will keep playing for Newcastle United, stay fit and just see how things go on from there."
