The 24-year-old has shared the right-back responsibilities with Aaron Hughes this season with equal success, and will be offered the new deal despite persistent rumours of Stephen Carr arriving from Spurs.

"I am happy that there are to be talks about a new contract when my current one runs out at the end of June," Griffin told the Evening Chronicle.

"I am extremely happy here, and why would I want to go anywhere else."

Griffin has made 75 Premiership appearances during an injury-hit six years at St James’ Park, since his £1.5million move from Stoke City.
