Goals From Midfield - The Key To Toon Success!

But so often we have fallen at the final hurdle because the goalscoring has been humped on the shoulders of the strikers.

Yes we've had a whole list of star strikers wearing the number nine, and those that have assisted in the firing line up front.

But so often we have had little contribution on the scoresheet from midfield.

That 1995/6 season we only saw eight goals from Ginola, Clark, Batty, Fox and Sellars.

And Kevin Nolan knows only too well how important his goals - and those from others in midfield - are going to be this season.

Kevin Nolan: “Last season we were all able to chip in with goals and we will need it again this year – after Villa we want it to continue at Wolves.

“If we can go again like last season that would be great.

“We’re going to need players to chip in with goals.

“We’re going to need a few from midfield too, so it is a team thing and not just about the strikers.

“Pete Lovenkrands is back, so he’s going to start getting on the scoresheet.

“Andy will keep plugging away, and Shola’s had a couple of chances (against Villa) and, on another day, he’d have scored.

“We’re going to need a lot of us to get to the eight to 10-goal mark.

“That’s the aim.

“We’ve got plenty of options in attack now.

“We’ve got to take our chances, otherwise teams will punish you in this league.”
