Shay Given: "The manager's working hard behind the scenes and we all really think we need some players.

"I know we've got some young defenders coming through but it's a lot to expect of them to be playing every week in the Premiership. They're learning their trade and it's important we get some experienced defenders in to help them develop and improve.

"The squad's the lightest that it's been for as long as I can remember. It's extremely important that we get some players in but the manager knows that, he's not silly.

"Offensively we're very strong, as strong as most clubs in that department. But we don't have too many defenders floating around these days.

"We've got a new manager and a new owner and it's all change at the club. It's important that the players concentrate on football. The gaffer's come in with his own backroom staff and has really freshened the place up.

"Some of his innovations are real eye-openers. We've all been in the ice baths and taken the protein shakes after the game. It's a real step up and it's probably what we need to be fitter and stronger than we have been for a number of years.

"We hope it's the start of something good but it's hard to say because it's only pre-season, we're not getting carried away, we're thin on the ground."
