Given reveals United triumph

In the knowledge that at least some travelling fans would be able to attend the game if it was played today and probably also fancying our chances on a muddy pitch, the club were successful in having the delayed by only 24 hours.

"We all said we wanted to play the next day but the message back from Uefa was that it should be next week," Given told the Evening Chronicle.

"Apparently there were television rights to consider and Real Madrid is the live game on Wednesday.

"But the people at Barcelona told us their pitch dries quickly and we want to get this game played.

"It will be okay as long as the weather clears up.

"We're all set and we're ready to go so we didn't want to go home and come back again.

"We'll train again before the match to keep us in the right shape and the right frame of mind because we don't want to disrupt our rhythm."

"In a sense the weather is typically British and if it hadn't been quite so bad then a bit of rain and a greasy pitch might have worked in our favour.

"It's an anti-climax in the sense that we're all geared up to play and now we'll have to wait for another 24 hours."

The good news is that the weather in Barcelona today is fine and that the game looks certain to go ahead tonight.

***** The game will be televised live on the ITV News Channel (kick off 7.45pm), which is available on digital cable (channels 123 and 617) and satellite (channel 625) and will also be broadcast on local radio and BBC Radio Five Live Extra. TV Highlights are on ITV1 at 10.55pm.
