David Ginola has urged Newcastle to keep Rafa Benitez happy in order to deter interest from other clubs.

Benitez's future is a subject for debate at the moment as the Spaniard is likely to become frustrated at matters off the field, with talks ongoing regarding a possible takeover of the club.

Now less than a month until the January transfer window, Benitez is only likely to be given serious spending power if Amanda Staveley's PCP Capital Partners can complete a deal with current owner Mike Ashley - but the clock is ticking.

Five losses in their last six games has seen the pressure grow on the former Real Madrid manager too, but Ginola has urged the Magpies to stick with Benitez as he offers the club consistency.

"To keep Rafa Benitez on board, that's the main thing," Ginola said. "If Benitez has any chance to go and manage another team, a big name around, it is going to be very difficult for Newcastle to keep him there.

"Talking about the consistency and the stability of the club in the next three, four, five years, I think Rafa Benitez is something, if you lose him you will go back to the nightmares of the past."

Newcastle's 3-1 loss to Benitez's former side Chelsea on Saturday sees them slip into 15th place in the Premier League and just five points above the relegation zone, with investment needed to add depth to the Toon's thin squad.

For the time being, the Magpies will be looking to put an end to their abysmal run of form by earning a home victory over Leicester City on Saturday, but will come up against a side in excellent form.
