But Hurst admits Bellamy, who Hammers boss Alan Curbishley has signed for £9million for, does have a point to prove with regard to his attitude.

The 27-year-old has been involved in a number of bust-ups during his career, with high-profile spats during his time with Newcastle and Liverpool.

Hurst: "In any sport you need people who are characters but there has been suspicion about Craig's character.

"Undoubtedly he's a good player but when you pay a lot of money for someone you want them to be successful and we're going places now with the manager.

"You want to be sure you get the right man on and off the field. He's still young, he's still learning and if he has learned form his mistakes, undoubtedly he's a terrific talent.

"From a talent point of view he will do our club the world of good."

Bellamy played 132 matches for Newcastle between 2001-5, scoring 42 goals.

Meanwhile ... Wigan's blast at West Ham claiming "they should be relegated" could backfire on them ... big time!

Marlon Harewood's move from West Ham to Wigan could be scuppered due to "strained relations between the clubs".

Harewood has been tipped for a £3.5million move the JJB Stadium after being told he could leave the by boss Alan Curbishley.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, the Hammers are reluctant to sell him to the Latics after chairman Dave Whelan called for them to be relegated from the Premier League for their part in the Carlos Tevez controversy.

Now I have to say, that DID have me laughing!
