Gascoigne is in a comfortable condition in Newcastle General Hospital following the incident.

The 43-year-old, who won 57 caps for England, has now used up all of his nine lives ... and unless someone implants a brain cell in that thick scull of his ... the next article you read about him on this website will be about his death.

He has battled alcohol addiction and depression in recent years, but seems on a downward spiral that is out of control.

He is currently awaiting trial having denied a charge of drink driving after being arrested in North Yorkshire in February.

The incident, involving a Vauxhall Astra, happened on Sunday evening at about 21.45 at Sandhill, on the city's Quayside.

The car, in which Gascoigne was a passenger, is believed to have left the road before then hitting a nearby signpost.

A 36-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The ambulance service confirmed that a passer-by called them to an incident on the Newcastle Quayside on Sunday evening.

Four ambulances were sent to assist the driver and three passengers.

They confirmed that three of them were then taken to Newcastle General Hospital for treatment.
