Freddy Counting The Cost - Vignal Or Souness?

As we reported yesterday, doubts over Souness' future at Newcastle have affected the transfer dealings at St James' Park this transfer window, and the efforts of Portsmouth defender Gregory Vignal to get the Magpies to make a quick move look doomed.

Vignal's career at Fratton Park appears to be over and, despite interest from both Monaco and Marseille, the defender wants to stay in this country.

Freddy Shepherd is seriously considering his own future, knowing he went against the wishes of the Toon Army when he brought in Souness, and he got it wrong. If he doesn't admit to it he's even more stupid than we thought. Whatever he does this time, it's his own last throw of the dice. Majority share-holder he maybe, but the fans are growing very restless and the chairman is very much the subject of their discontent. £500,000 would get Vignal - allegedly it will take £5m to pay of the Scouse brigade in the Toon dug out.

Vignal: "I am allowed to leave during the winter transfer window, Portsmouth accepted to release me and set a price for a possible transfer.

"I am leaving, knowing I am not attracted by a loan. My agent has phone calls with Graeme Souness, I want to work with him.

"He knows me, but, before hiring a left full back, The Magpies have to sign a forward and know if Souness will remain in charge at the club. I would like to go to Newcastle."
