The Seagulls have enjoyed a superb start to the season, taking 13 points from their first five games to top the table at the end of the first month.

Hughton's move to a 4-4-2 formation appears to have transformed Albion's fortunes, and the mercurial Lua Lua was a central figure in two of their victories.

Lua Lua has been seen as an impact player in the past but he has been at his best since the season opened, scoring three goals including winners against Nottingham Forest and Blackburn.

His competition for the players' award comes from Ipswich Town winger Ryan Fraser, Birmingham City midfielder Stephen Gleeson and Burnley centre-back Michael Keane.

Fraser has scored twice for Town already this season, and assisted on three other goals, while Gleeson scored superb goals against Derby and the MK Dons and Keane has weighed in with three headed goals for the Clarets.

The other three managers nominated for that award represent the teams in second, third and fourth in the table – all of them tied on 10 points.

Hull boss Steve Bruce has overseen a squad overhaul this summer but his side managed three wins and a draw from their first five games – they also boast a perfect home record.

Ipswich have the same record as the Tigers, with three wins and a draw under Mick McCarthy, and the final nominee is QPR's Chris Ramsey, whose side is unbeaten in four games since losing their opener at Charlton.
