The 35-year-old is at Sheffield Wednesday, but he's conceded that his time in the professional game could well come to an end before the 2009-10 season kicks-off in August, bringing to an end an illustrious career.

Steve Watson: 'It's very likely that I won't play again professionally but I still want to get back to a decent level of fitness so I can play when I want to play.

'If I get fitter and stronger and it feels better, then I can't 100 per cent rule it out that I won't give it another try.'

He made his debut for Newcastle as a 16-year old under Jim Smith, and looked to see out his career at SJP, but Ruud Gullit sold him when he was manager of the club.

Tipped to be a full international, he never won the cap his career deserved.

Steve became the youngest ever player to play for Newcastle in November 1990 when he played against Wolves as substitute for Liam O'Brien. Popular player who was shocked when Ruud Gullit sold him to Aston Villa in 1998. Was famous for a while for his Mexican-style throw-in that he used only twice (v Boro and Hull). Great utility player who could play anywhere. Scored a cracking goal at Anfield in the League Cup against Liverpool.
