Bellamy, who had been a major doubt before the game with a knee injury and was not expected to play in Portugal, was only risked until half-time in a match Wales lost to a late goal from Legia Warsaw striker Roger Guerreiro.

He become the target of one fan who was hurling abuse from the main stand.

Bellamy was doing a touchline interview at the time, and he turned to the fan to shout back that he deserved a little more respect while trying to do TV work.

He pointed back at the fan before being ushered away by Wales backroom staff.

Bellamy: "These things happen, I don't want to make any fuss about it. Maybe it was because of a few drinks.

"It always seems to be me, though. I have shown my commitment to Wales by turning up for these sort of games, but it is me that always seems to get picked on for stick.

"I'm the one who turns up for games. I'm passionate about my country, maybe too passionate at times."

Signed from Coventry City in the summer of 2001 for £6m, one year after Bobby Robson tried to sign him from Norwich. Striker who went through a terrible time at Highfield Road, and blamed for Coventry's relegation. But his first season at SJP was remarkable. His injury towards the close of 2001/2 cost United a crack at the title. Made headlines on the front of the newspapers as well as the back for a variety of incidents. Then of course there was the physical battle on the training ground as soon as Graeme Souness arrived at SJP. Souness tried to sell him to Birmingham but he turned it down at the last moment and went on loan to Celtic. Sold to Blackburn Rovers in July 2005 for £5m plus add-ons.
